The name comes from their dual role of cooling and protecting the furnace wall.​
Originally, water walls were just meant to shield the furnace from overheating, not for heating. But as people realized how well they exchanged heat, they started replacing steam drums as the boiler’s main heating component.​
Picture this: an evaporative heating surface made of parallel pipes, lining the boiler chamber’s inner wall. That’s the water wall. It absorbs heat from the high - temp flame and flue gas, turning water into steam or hot water inside the pipes. Plus, it keeps the furnace wall cool, protecting it from damage. In big boilers, where the flame burns super hot and heat radiation is intense, water walls soak up 40 - 50% or even more of the boiler’s heat.
